The South Waccamaw neighborhood is a vast territory adjacent to the northern area of Columbia Owens Downtown Airport. On the very southern tip of the University of South Carolina, this community is a busy and thriving one with many activities, sports events, and historical districts.

Within the neighborhood of South Waccamaw, towering hardwoods shelter many homes with a shady green canopy and seclusion. The vicinity embraces small cottages and ranch-style dwellings with vinyl siding and wood. While some lawns are manicured and green, others are more natural in appearance. In other corners of this community, houses are still small, but may have privacy fencing or front porches that span the length of the home. Decorative trees like Crepe Myrtles fill out landscaped spots. Much of the sector feels rustic and casual.

There are seven parks surrounding South Waccamaw. Owens Field Skate Park is a skateboarding facility and disc golf park. Sarge Frye Field is a part of historical University of South Carolina. Other parks are Bates, Hollywood, and Oakhurst. Ben Arnold Center Park is also local. Walkers, pet owners, and residents enjoy family activities, picnics, and sports games in these city recreational facilities.

Parents appreciate the Montessori School of Columbia and Childtime Learning Center. There are multiple Christian denominational preschools in this region. A.C. Moore School and Rosewood Elementary School are within walking distance, as is Hand Middle School.

This working-class section of Columbia, South Carolina is within two miles of the Central Midlands Regional Transit Authority, or CMRTA. The Transfer Center is available there. The Columbia Owens Downtown Airport caters to small planes. Interstates 77 and 126 make travel destinations an easy commute.
