The Heritage neighborhood is a little-known Columbia community of ranch-style, brick homes in a lushly natural area that looks rural. Tucked into little glens of hardwoods, some dwellings are large, two-story homes with a retro appeal. Pristine lawns are sprawling and manicured with decorative trees and trimmed bushes. This subdivision houses off-base military personnel, college students, and small nuclear families.

Among the schools that service the Heritage community are Burnside and Meadowfield Elementary, Hand Middle, and Dreher High Schools. Preschoolers and toddlers will enjoy La Petite Academy. The University of South Carolina and Midlands Technical College provide many learning opportunities, sports games, and recreational activities to the area. The William Jennings Bryan Dorn VA Medical Center is local and takes care of the health care needs of disabled military personnel and veterans. The Fort Jackson Army Training and Military Base is situated on the outskirts of the Heritage community. Both provide an economic boost to the greater Columbia area.

The Veterans Memorial Freeway or Interstate 77 is adjacent to the Heritage neighborhood. Those who must commute appreciate this major thoroughfare.
