The Eva P. Trezevant neighborhood in Columbia South Carolina is a relatively small neighborhood, comprising of only slightly more than a dozen streets covering only about one quarter of a mile. The most significant structure in this neighborhood is Benedict College, which has a long and distinguished history.
Benedict College was founded in 1870. Its founder was Mrs. Bathsheba Benedict of Rhode Island. Her goal was to provide a learning institution for emancipated African-Americans. This college today remains one of the fastest growing colleges in the list of United Negro College Fund Schools.
Benedict College is a liberal arts school and offers degrees in a variety of disciplines including music, physics, political science and mathematics, to name a few. Benedict College created the Center of Excellence for Community Development in 1977. This center was designed to help students become involved in problem solving for the community. They offer four distinct programs including Business and Economic Development, Democracy and Government, Educational Excellence and a Child and Family Program.
Benedict College also has played host to some impressive names including Michelle Obama, Senator Hillary Clinton and Reverend Jesse Jackson.
Benedict College was heavily involved in helping to create a sixty acre sports complex off Two Notch Road (also located in Columbia) that includes fitness trails, tennis courts and other recreational facilities. These facilities surround the Charlie W. Johnson Stadium where the college hosts their football games.
Benedict College is also heavily involved in community education offering first time home buyer’s classes, entrepreneurial training classes and community service education classes for children of all ages.
