Both residents and visitors can tour the Heyward-Washington House. Daniel Heyward built this house for his son Thomas in 1772. Thomas Heyward was one of the original signers of the Declaration of Independence. There is a magnificent collection of handmade furniture on display in the house. In May of 1791, George Washington stayed at the Heyward-Washington house while visiting Charleston.
