The Summer Hill neighborhood is situated on the north side of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, within Allegheny County. This community is bound by Interstate 279 on the west and East Street and Mt. Pleasant Road on the south. On the east, it extends to include Colby Street/Harpen Road, which runs the length of the community. The community’s northern boundary is harder to define, but extends past Ivory Avenue/Troy Hill Road, roughly to Rodenbaugh Avenue, Cleveland Avenue, and Nelson Run Road.
In total, the Summer Hill neighborhood spans .575 square miles. Home to 1,160 people, this community is largely residential, but there are commercial offerings scattered throughout the neighborhood, as well. Like much of Pittsburgh, a good deal of untouched wooded land can also be found here, which provides the community with a somewhat secluded feel within the big city. One of the significant attractions near Summer Hill is the Allegheny Observatory, located just on the other side of I-279. Part of the nearby University of Pittsburgh’s Department of Physics and Astronomy, this observatory is not only one of the world’s foremost institutions for astronomical research, but it is also a nationally registered historical place and a state historic landmark.
For more to see and do, residents of Summer Hill hop on the bordering interstate and make the 10-minute drive into downtown Pittsburgh. Nested along the riverfronts are a variety of cultural attractions, including art galleries, live music venues, and theaters. Prominent medical centers, city parks, and higher education options can also be found in the downtown area, as well as PNC Park (home of the Pittsburgh Pirates MLB team) and Heinz Stadium (home of the Pittsburgh Steelers NFL team).
