The history of Herrs Island dates back to early owner Benjamin Herr, who utilized the land for farming. After that, it was mostly industrial, home to the Pennsylvania Railroad, saw mills, stockyards, and soap works. By the late 20th century, most of the industrial activity had vacated the island, and development began to create a community of business parks, townhomes, and a marina. This is likely when the island was renamed. Today, Washington’s Landing is a prime example of an urban renewal project in Pittsburgh.

Former Herrs Island is rather small, bisected by a single street – Waterfront Drive. Bridges that cross the island are created by 31st Street and 33rd Street. The marina can be found in the southwestern portion of the island, along with several dozen townhome units. The northeastern portion is home to the Washington’s Landing Public Tennis Courts, and the midsection hosts office parks and the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy.

The drive into downtown Pittsburgh from Herrs Island takes less than 10 minutes via the 31st Street Bridge and Liberty Avenue. The downtown area offers more in the way of cultural attractions, entertainment, dining, and shopping options. Several parks, medical centers, and higher education options can be found in this area as well, including the University of Pittsburgh (Pitt) campus and Carnegie Mellon University. Residents of the former Herrs Island also come to the downtown area to see the Pittsburgh Steelers NFL team play at Heinz Stadium, or to cheer on the Pittsburgh Pirates MLB team at PNC Park.
