Downtown Neighborhood in Pittsburgh, PA

Downtown Neighborhood

Downtown Pittsburgh is one of the most desirable areas in the city for young, affluent people looking to live near some of the trendiest restaurants, shops and nightlife options in the city. Sports venues, museums and theaters are all within walking distance for residents in downtown. Recent redevelopment work has revitalized one of the oldest areas in Pittsburgh. Residents can revel in history while taking advantage of the new amenities available in Pittsburgh’s downtown.

The main downtown area is considered the city’s “Golden Triangle” and is bounded by the Alleghany River to the north, the Monongahela River to the south and west, and Interstate 579 to the east. A section of the city east of the I-579 between Bedford Avenue and 5th Avenue extending to Crawford Street is also considered to be part of downtown. Downtown Pittsburgh is part of the 15222 and 15219 ZIP codes. Most housing in downtown Pittsburgh is either apartment rentals or the purchase of condos and town homes.

Many residents of downtown Pittsburgh forgo car travel and rely on a combination of walking, bicycling and public transportation. There are four light rail stations in downtown along with many bus stops, with free bus and train travel at certain times of day.

Residents with children have public and private school options. City High is a charter school that is lauded as one of the most forward-thinking charter schools in the country. The school is technologically-advanced, with students receiving access to learning tools such as free laptop computers.
