Central Northside Neighborhood

Central Northside is an up-and-coming neighborhood in the urban center of Pittsburgh. Significant redevelopment efforts have helped Central Northside become one of the hottest housing markets near the city’s center. Housing prices are still low in Central Northside compared to other desirable neighborhoods in Pittsburgh, making it a great location for a first-time property owner.

The Central Northside neighborhood is part of the 15212 ZIP code in Pittsburgh’s District 6. It is located just north of the Allegheny and Allegheny West neighborhoods. Its boundaries include West North Avenue to the south and James Street to the east. Its western boundary extends north from Allegheny Avenue to Pennsylvania Avenue, and from Brighton Avenue to O’Hern Avenue. Its northern border includes O’Hern Avenue, Perrysville Avenue, and Fountain Avenue.

The streets in Central Northside are named after prominent soldiers and battles from the Mexican War of 1846, and are commonly referred to as the Mexican War Streets. The street plan was laid out by General William Robinson, Jr., who had returned to Pittsburgh after serving in the Mexican-American War and later became mayor of Pittsburgh. The neighborhood’s architecture is marked by brick row houses that have been restored in recent years. These homes often feature Gothic and Greek Revival design elements such as turrets and stained glass windows.

Residents enjoy walking the tree-lined streets and visiting the many community gardens that are in the area. One area of recent development has been the Garden Theater Block, which is centered on one of the original theaters in the city. The neighborhood lies within walking distance of downtown Pittsburgh, the city’s professional sports venues, and major cultural attractions like the Warhol Museum.
