Along the Monongahela River about 12 miles southeast of Pittsburgh, the township of North Versailles is part of an area that dates back to the 1680s, when William Penn was granted land from King Charles III. It wasn’t until the late 1700s that Versailles was given its name as a nod to the French, who helped during the American Revolution.
Versailles split into North Versailles and South Versailles in 1869. The town’s long history is evident in its historical architecture, which can be seen in the Victorian-style homes and its old-fashioned downtown complete with wide sidewalks and period lighting. The Bowman Homestead, built around 1825, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The George Westinghouse Bridge is also on the National Register of Historic Places. It was built in 1930.
