Neighboring an Air Force base that serves as the headquarters for the Oklahoma City Air Logistics Center, Kennington is a residential community located on the southeastern outskirts of Oklahoma City’s urban center. Bordered by a major highway, it allows ease of access to the base as well as other areas of the city while remaining in a suburb of the larger city.
Tinker Air Force Base is home to commercial services available for military personnel and their families and includes a flower shop, fitness center, and other shopping venues. In addition to having a robust community aimed at services and programs for military families, there are also recreational opportunities including the Tinker Golf Course, which sits to the north of the base.
For civilians, restaurants including Pizza Hut, Denny’s and La Greek Restaurant are located along South Douglas Boulevard to the southeast of the military base. This shopping area is also home to an auto shop specializing in race cars as well as Vintage Marketplace, a local antique and vintage shop specializing in furniture, clothing, and household items.
Sitting to the south of Interstate Highway 40, Kennington’s southern boundary is marked by Southeast 51st Street. Its parallel intersects with South Post Road, the neighborhood’s western border. To the north, Southeast 44th Street sets the neighborhood a block off of the highway and runs into its eastern border, South Westminster Road.
There are several schools surrounding the Kennington area. Barnes Elementary School sits to the south of Kennington within walking distance. A block further is the Life Christian Academy, a private, Christian alternative to public schools focusing on college preparatory curriculum for pre-K through 12th grades.
