George Mason University is a public university based in unincorporated Fairfax County, Virginia. The school offers other campuses nearby in Arlington County, Prince William County and Loudoun County. The university enrolls over 32,500 students, making it the largest university by head count in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
George Mason, an American revolutionary, patriot, and founding father is the school’s namesake. Founded in 1957, GMU became an independent institution in 1972 and is recognized today for its strong programs in economics, law, creative writing, and computer science. The university’s department of economics has twice won the Nobel Prize in Economics.
The main campus rests on 677 acres just south of the City of Fairfax, and approximately 15 miles west of Washington, D.C. The Fairfax campus enjoys public transit on the Washington Metro, and additional free bus routes from the Metro station to the University.
The university has superior strength in proteomics, neuroscience and computational sciences, and receives research support from such agencies as the National Institutes of Health, NASA, the National Science Foundation and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency.
Mason’s students can apply to the prestigious Oxford Honors Program, open to highly-qualified students. The program includes travel to the United Kingdom where students spend six to 12 months months as students of Oxford University.
The school’s sports teams are called the Patriots. The university’s men’s and women’s sports teams participate in the NCAA’s Division I, and are members of the Colonial Athletic Association, or CAA.
