DePaul University, a private education and research university located in Chicago, Illinois was founded by the Vincentians in 1898, and takes its name from the 17th century French priest Saint Vincent de Paul.
Today’s student body consists of approximately 16,000 undergraduate and 9,100 graduates and law students, making DePaul the largest Roman Catholic university and one of the 10 largest private universities in the United States. It is the largest private university in Illinois, and the ninth-largest private, not-for-profit university in the US. DePaul is a member of the Big East Conference.
The school is recognized as having one of the country’s most diverse student bodies, and places a strong emphasis on recruiting first-generation university students and those from disadvantaged backgrounds while still maintaining academic excellence.
The university’s two primary campuses are in Chicago’s historic Lincoln Park neighborhood and the downtown Loop area. The Lincoln Park campus is the oldest and largest of the university’s campuses, situated on 40 acres. It is also the most active, offering a traditional university environment; approximately 3,000 students live on campus in its 11 residence halls and apartments.
The Loop campus is convenient to Chicago’s stock exchanges, financial district, and the Art Institute of Chicago. Its 11-story building, called the DePaul Center, was once a department store. It has been fully renovated to include modern classrooms, and is home to the College of Commerce.
DePaul University’s four suburban campuses are located in Rolling Meadows, O’Hare, Oak Forest and Naperville. For the most part, these satellite campuses serve part-time professional students completing undergraduate and graduate degrees.
