Set in the lush, tropical south Florida city of Miami, Florida International University represents the diversity and culture of its sunny city. FIU is a relatively young school– established in 1965–but it is one of the largest public universities in the country. It is Miami’s only four-year public research university.

In 1965, the university was built upon an abandoned air field. The control tower was left intact and remains a central focal point on campus. The university grew steadily and in 1995, the FIU Stadium (or the Cage) was opened. It later became home to the new football team, the FIU Golden Panthers, who played their inaugural game in the fall of 2002.

In addition to the stadium, FIU is home to Frost Art Museum, the International Hurricane Research Center, and the Wolfsonian-FIU Museum, located in the historic Art Deco District.

The university’s alumni include award-winning author Dennis Lehane, actor Andy Garcia, and NBA point guard Carlos Arroyo, who has played for the Detroit Pistons, the Miami Heat, and the Boston Celtics.
