For a small city in northwestern North Dakota, Minot has an eventful and colorful history. In 1886, a small settlement developed during construction of the Great Northern Railway, and the population exploded almost overnight. In the 1920s, due to its proximity to the Canadian border, Minot attracted Al Capone, who used the network of underground tunnels to smuggle alcohol in from Canada during prohibition.

Even with its somewhat raucous beginnings, Minot continued to grow. Today, this impressive little city is the county seat of Ward County and is home to nearly 50,000 residents. In addition to county government, Minot is home to the Minot International Airport, Minot State University, and Minot Air Force Base.

Minot is an active city with several annual festivals. The nation’s largest Scandinavian-American festival is held every autumn and attracts thousands of visitors. It features Nordic exhibits, cuisine, and arts and crafts, as well as contests, dances, and a parade. The North Dakota State Fair is also held every July in Minot. This major event features agriculture and commercial exhibitions, live entertainment, and carnival rides.

With 17 parks, several golf courses, and the highly-acclaimed and pet-friendly Roosevelt Park Zoo, residents of Minot have plenty of recreational opportunities. Black Butte Adventures features hiking and biking on an eight-mile loop that showcases the diverse wildlife of the prairie. The Dakota Hills Winery offers tours and free wine tasting. Nearby Fort Mandan celebrates the historic trek of Lewis and Clark, who wintered here in the early 1800s.

When you rent an apartment in Minot, you’ll enjoy a vibrant arts scene. Minot is home to a large arts council, which supports an art museum, theater troops, the symphony orchestra, and an opera company. Minot also enjoys a large indie and punk music scene, celebrated at the nationally-acclaimed AMP, a youth center that doubles as a music venue.
