Montclair is a very small, yet densely populated community of Raleigh. With an area of 0.039 square miles, it has an approximate population of 100 residents. Approximately 40 percent of the residential buildings in the neighborhood are single-family, detached units. Many of the homes are older, and they are of several varying styles, including nostalgic ranch-style bungalows.
Shelley Lake Sertoma Park is only a half-mile west of Montclair. It contains the 53-acre Shelley Lake, the namesake of the park. Shelley Lake is part of the Greenway Trail System, and this park offers three miles of multiple purpose, paved trails for hiking, biking, running, and dog walking. The on-site Sertoma Arts Center offers art classes to residents of Montclair and the surrounding communities.
The North Carolina Transportation Hall of Fame, a state history museum, is located only a mile northeast of Montclair. The Museum of Natural Sciences, which is ideal for families and school-aged children, is five miles south of Montclair, and it offers several educational programs. The North Carolina Museum of Art, the Marbles Kids Museum, and the Raleigh City Museum are all within a five-mile radius of the community.
Montclair is a family-friendly community. The Green School, well known for its high quality, special education department, is within walking distance of anywhere in Montclair. The Kinder Care Learning Center is a preschool and kindergarten in the community and an important part of Montclair living for parents and their small children. The Jesse O. Sanderson High School is just north of the Montclair community and is known for the outstanding scholastic achievements of its students.
