Lassiter Mill takes its name from the now-closed Lassiter Mills, founded by Charles Lassiter just after the turn of the century. Fire claimed the mill in 1959, but the name was distinctive enough to replace the area’s former name of Crabtree Falls. The Lassiters remained in the area to serve as one of the communities anchoring families.

Homes in the area are large and creatively landscaped, seeming to incorporate their own woodland waterways in with the carefully manicured lawns. Architecture varies, but there is a preference for an understated Southern look with hints of old Victorian. Brick is the preferred exterior, though crisp white siding with dark shutters also makes a frequent appearance.

The neighborhood is bordered by the popular North Hills shopping center, and its boundary roads are generally considered to be Six Forks Road and the Inner Beltline portion of Glenwood Avenue. Lassiter Mills Road serves as the main thoroughfare, winding through the approximate middle of the area.

Most of the area is residential, with the exception of a few specialty boutiques that preview the shift into the North Hills district. Rothgeb Park and the Carolina Country Club provide the largest sources of greenspace, though the overall area seems natural and organic. It is a very popular running and walking area of Raleigh, and the evening hours find many singles and couples out for a stroll.

Seasonally, the Lassiter Mill area presents one of Raleigh’s best Christmas light displays. Homes start to decorate early so that the dark weeks of December have a decidedly cheerful glow, and the annual “Tour of Homes” events are very popular.
