The neighborhood of Franklin Boulevard/Shirley Lane is located in ZIP code 27401. Situated east of downtown Greensboro, Franklin/Shirley is north of Interstates I-40/I-85. Major thoroughfares are McConnell Road on the south, South English Street to the west and East Market/Burlington Road to north. The area on the east is farmland.

Franklin Boulevard and Shirley Lane are two north-south streets within the neighborhood. Houses nearer Franklin on the west are older homes. More recent homes surround Shirley. Streets turning off Shirley end in cul-de-sacs. Except for the main streets, including Franklin, there are no sidewalks and not a lot of shady trees. For recreation, however, many parks are located nearby.

Heath Park is on the west side of Franklin Boulevard. Comprised of 12 acres of open and wooded areas, it includes a softball field and a playground. Farther west is the 11.9-acre Bingham Park, which consists of open, rolling land and features a multipurpose concrete court, picnic shelter, and softball field.

A much larger park is southwest of Franklin/Shirley. The Jimmie L. Barber Park is comprised of the Simkins Indoor Sports Pavilion, which includes tennis courts, four combination basketball and volleyball courts; the Penn-Wright baseball stadium; an 18-hole disc golf course; a one-mile walking trail; picnic shelters; and playgrounds.

Residents have access to shopping on East Market/Burlington Road, including ABC Stores and Kerr Drug.

Nearby schools include Waldo C. Falkener Senior Elementary, Hairston Middle and Dudley High (Magnet), as well as North Carolina A&T State University and Bennett College.

West of Franklin Boulevard/Shirley Lane are the Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital and the University of North Carolina-Greensboro.
