This area is surrounded by the Proximity Park Historic District and the Grove Park Historic District. Scottish golf course designer Donald Ross redesigned the original golf course in 1913. In 1926, the clubhouse was designated as an Asheville Local Historic Landmark.

The Preservation Society of Asheville and Buncombe County is located on Charlotte Street. The Asheville Historic Trolley is available for a tour of the area, including Charlotte Street. Much of the area has been preserved to provide a romantic old town setting.
