Lackawanna, New York, once an important area for steel manufacturing, is located just five minutes from downtown Buffalo on the coast of Lake Erie.
In the early 1900s, the Lackawanna Iron and Steel Company moved from Scranton to the shores of Lake Erie in what was then called West Seneca. Once the second largest steel company in the world, it closed in 1983.
Since then, a new sight dots the shores of Lake Erie — windmills. Steel Winds, a wind energy project sitting on 30 acres of the former Bethlehem Steel Plant, is one of the largest urban wind power developments in the world.
The crown jewel of Lackawanna is the beautiful Our Lady of Victory Basilica, a national shrine located in the center of town. The Buffalo Botanical Gardens is within walking distance of the basilica.
With this combination of manufacturing and natural beauty, Lackawanna’s apartment renters will never want to sing the blues.
