The town of Avon is south of Rochester in western New York. A small village, also named Avon, is located within the town. With its ideal location on the Genesee River, Avon first drew settlers back in 1789, who named their settlement “Hartford.” The name was soon changed to distinguish the community from another with the same name.

During the 19th century, the mineral springs located in and around Avon became a huge attraction, and soon bathhouses and hotels populated the area. This important era and the rest of Avon’s history is preserved at the Museum of Avon Preservation and Historical Society, located in the Avon Town Hall, built in 1907.
