South End is a neighborhood that is located in Albany. The community is bordered to the north by Basset Street, to the south by 4th Avenue, and to the east by Vine Street.
South End is pedestrian-friendly, which means that the residents of the neighborhood have many shops and attractions within walking distance. For those who want to use public transportation, there are several bus lines available within walking distance.
The schools in the South End are a mixture of charter and special-needs schools. The Harriet Tubman Free Academy is a special-needs school for students in grades 9 through 12. The Free School is a private, special-needs school that serves grades K through 12. The Thomas S O’Brien Academy is the nearest magnet school to South End. The New Scotland Elementary school is the nearest public school.
One of the more interesting parks in this part of New York is the Crailo State Historic Site. Crailo is located in an area that used to be controlled by New Netherlands, which is what the Dutch named the colony that existed before the British took control. Also near the South End neighborhood is Capitol Park, a site where the British unsuccessfully tried to cut off the New York colony from the southern colonies during the Revolutionary War.
The Egg is one of the more unusual theaters in the Albany region. It was constructed in 1966 and is a performing arts theater that was literally built in the shape of an egg. Chamber orchestras, music concerts, and plays are performed at The Egg.
