Downtown Neighborhood

Downtown Albany is in the 12207 zip code of the city. This is the city’s oldest neighborhood and the central location for many government buildings. State Street once served as the city’s Main Street until commerce outgrew the tightly packed area. The city is now looking to expand permanent residential housing into the neighborhood.

The busy streets of Downtown Albany twist and overlap until the neighborhood is contained by Orange Street to the north. The bank of the Hudson River, lazy and melodic in the summer and harsher in winter, is the eastern border. Madison Avenue draws the southern boundary of the old district, as Eagle Street acts as the western front.

To the north of the stoic state buildings is the Capitol Repertory Theater, an art center known for springtime flights of fancy and fun. To the east, between the city and the river, is the Mohawk-Hudson hike/bike trail for outdoor enthusiasts. To the south of the neighborhood is the arena known as the Times Union Center, home of the Siena men’s basketball team and Albany River Rats hockey.

The Downtown neighborhood officially has very few apartments, as office buildings are the dominant structures. Closer to the capital, on the outskirts of the neighborhood, housing is available. The rent in the capital district is reasonably priced and affordable studio apartments, sublets and room shares are available.

The neighborhood was designed to accommodate a large amount of pedestrian traffic at once, offering large leisurely sidewalks to the traveler during the off-peak hours. Public transportation is handled regionally by the Capitol Transit Authority, operating scheduled bus routes.
