Pine Hills is a historic neighborhood in western Albany, about 2.5 miles from the downtown area. The community extends to Washington Avenue on the north, Woodlawn Avenue on the south, South Manning Boulevard and North Pine Avenue on the west, and South Lake Avenue on the east. Pine Hills is in the 12202 ZIP code, within Albany County.
Governed by the Pine Hills Neighborhood Association, this large community is partially residential, with some commercial offerings scattered throughout the neighborhood. Among the amenities within neighborhood bounds are two community parks, a children’s theater, grocery store, library, post office, and movie theater. The Pine Hills Elementary School and The College of St. Rose can also be found within the borders of Pine Hills.
The Albany University District extends to the east to include the SUNY Albany Downtown Campus and The Sage Colleges-Albany Campus, both easily within walking distance of Pine Hills. A variety of medical facilities can also be found in this area, including the Albany Medical Center Hospital and the Stratton VA Medical Center-Albany.
For outdoor recreation, Pine Hills residents are adjacent to Washington Park, one of the city’s largest and most popular parks. Various performances and events are regularly held there, including concerts and an annual holiday lights display. Washington Park also hosts a lake for fishing. The lake is surrounded by winding trails frequented by walkers, joggers, bikers, and dog walkers. Other amenities include tennis courts, basketball courts, shuffleboard, a playground, and a disc golf course.
When residents of Pine Hills are in the mood for a bit of arts and entertainment, they head east into the downtown area, which is easily accessible on foot, via public transport, or by car. The downtown area hosts the state capitol, as well as cultural attractions like Times Union Center and the New York State Museum. It is also home to a variety of popular eateries and unique shops.
