A diverse county in income, population, and ethnicity, Essex County reflects the greater New York Metro area as a whole. Essex income levels range from around $20,000 in some locations to nearly $200,000 in others. The county seat, Newark, is also the largest city. It is a major hub for shipping, air, and rail.

The county was officially formed in 1683 and has over 160 sites on the National Register of Historic Places, including Weequahic Park, home to the largest lake in Essex County. Essex County is home to several parks including the oldest county park in the nation, Branch Brook Park, located in Newark. The park, established in 1895, contains 360 acres. It is the largest public park in the city. The park contains over 4,000 cherry trees and is home to the annual Cherry Blossom Festival, held in April.
