Sunset Hill Apartments for Rent

Sunset Hill, a wealthy southern Kansas City neighborhood, is part of what is known as the ”Country Club District.” This is an upscale residential district developed by J.C. Nichols between 1906 and 1950. Sunset Hill also boasts many homes designed by famous architects including Frank Lloyd Wright; McKim, Mead, and White; Louis Curtiss; and Mary Rockwell Hook.

Several of these historic homes are registered with the National Register of Historic Places or National Register of Historic Homes. The J. C. Nichols House, for instance, is a two and one-half story Georgian Revival residence that can be admired at 1214 West 55th Street, in Sunset Hill.

Country Club Plaza, established as well by J.C. Nichols, is Kansas City’s premiere upscale entertainment district. It was the first shopping center in the world built to accommodate shoppers arriving in cars. This 55 acre shopping center, opened back in 1923, today boasts several high-end retail establishments, restaurants and entertainment venues conveniently located a few blocks away from Sunset Hill.

The Sunset Hill neighborhood is somewhat walkable, with just a few amenities within walking distance. However, those looking for a place to walk, jog or enjoy the fresh air, may visit Jacob L. Loose Park, a 75 acre historical park equipped with a municipal rose garden and Japanese tea room. Other amenities offered in this park are walking trails, lake, playground, picnic areas, arboretum, rain garden and four tennis courts.

Parents of school age children can take advantage of several nearby schools: Pembroke Hill School offering classes for children from preschool through 12th grade, Brookside Day School for children from preschool through 6th grade, Westwood View Elementary School, and Saint Teresa’a Academy, a Catholic, college preparatory school for young women.

The Sunset Hill neighborhood is bounded by Ward Parkway, West 55th Street and Wornall Road. Sunset Hill is home to about 861 residents which make up 0.2% of Kansas City’s total population.
