Often called South Indian Mound, the neighborhood, together with North Indian Mound, was named for an ancient American Indian campground at what is now the east end of Kessler Park. When early settlers excavated the area they found a stone hearth, arrowheads, spear-points, knives, and, in another area, human bones. In 1938, workers from the WPA and the Kansas City Parks Department restored the mound to the appearance the pioneers had found.

Elementary schools in or near South India Mound include Northeast K-7, Garfield and James Traditional Elementary. The middle school is Northeast Middle School, and the high school is Northeast High School. Holy Cross is a parochial school located in North India Mound.

Budd Park, the second oldest park in Kansas City, is one focus of the neighborhood. This grassy informal park has two children’s playgrounds, a baseball diamond, tennis courts, and a swimming pool. The park is ornamented with rustic picnic shelters on a beautiful open structure of native Kansas stone.
