Ruskin Heights is a small, vibrant neighborhood located in southwest Kansas City, in Missouri. This suburban community, once farmland, was founded in the early 1950s. A tornado passed through in 1957 destroying a good part of Ruskin Heights. However, the neighborhood was successfully rebuilt into a stable community. A monument was erected in memorial of the lives lost, people injured, and general devastation as a result of the tornado.
Today, Ruskin Heights offers an excellent location close to schools, shopping centers, highways, restaurants, and businesses. Outdoor enthusiasts will appreciate living nearby Longview Lake Park, encompassing 930 acres of water entertainment. Things to do in the lake include power boating, water skiing, and jet skiing. Longview Lake Marina offers the possibility to rent boats. The park offers also nature trails, picnic areas, fishing pond, beach, softball complex, horse park, dog training areas, and radio-controlled model airplane field.
The Ruskin Heights Shopping Center, severely damaged by the tornado in 1957, was rebuilt and can be conveniently found in Ruskin Heights at the intersection of East 111th Street and Blue Ridge Boulevard.
Parents of school age children have a nice array of schools to choose from in Ruskin Heights and nearby areas. Cristos Academy is a few blocks away off Ruskin Way. Ruskin High School is conveniently located off of East 111th Street. Ingels elementary school is a short commute away right off nearby Food Lane. Johnson Elementary School is just around the block off of Marsh Avenue, whereas Symington Elementary School is on Ruskin Way.
Ruskin Heights is home to about 4,227 residents which make up 1% of Kansas City’s total population.
