Old Westport Neighborhood

Old Westport is a delightfully walkable neighborhood of historic buildings, small shops, restaurants, and nightspots. Once a stop on the Santa Fe Trail, it became an independent prairie town. Now Old Westport is a trendy entertainment district of Kansas City, Missouri, as well as a centrally located place to make a home.

The quaint neighborhood is fewer than five miles south of downtown, and within reasonable walking distance of Country Club Plaza, the upscale shopping mall. Old Westport is also less than two miles from the University of Missouri and Rockhurst University.

On the south, West Forty-Third Street forms the boundary of the Old Westport district. On the east, the boundary is Main Street, and on the north, it is West Thirty-Ninth Street. On the west side, Southwest Trafficway, also called Summit Street, serves as the dividing line. Broadway Boulevard and Westport Road are the main streets of the neighborhood, intersecting near its center. The zip code for Old Westport is 64111.

Nightclubs and restaurants cluster in certain blocks of the popular district. The diverse neighborhood also holds quiet side streets of one- or two-story older homes and apartments, and busier thoroughfares where modern apartment buildings, lofts, and condominiums stand tall. In the southeast corner of Old Westport is the touchingly simple Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial Park.

The parkway that contains the memorial continues south of the neighborhood into Mill Creek Park, with paths and a splendid fountain. From beside the fountain, it is only two or three blocks east to Southmoreland Park, the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, and the world-class Kansas City Sculpture Park.
