The historic neighborhood of Northeast Kansas City today is a lively arts community with great residential options, from historic homes to modern lofts. With a pedestrian friendly setting, this mix of residential and commercial structures works well, and is just minutes from downtown attractions and activities.

The Northeast neighborhood is located between downtown Kansas City and the smaller city of Independence, Missouri. It includes land east of the downtown area between Interstate 70 and the Missouri River.

A neighborhood of classic boulevards, two outstanding Northeast streets are Cliff Drive, which follows the river bluffs of the Missouri, and Gladstone Boulevard, with its huge historic homes and mansions. Both are favorites of area cyclists, and there is a paved trail that parallels much of Gladstone Boulevard.

The Historic Kansas City Foundation also offers walking tours of the neighborhood, which focus on Gladstone and Benton Boulevards with homes dating from 1880 to 1911, as well as the Kansas City Museum.

Once the dazzling estate of Kansas City resident and lumber baron R.A. Long, today Corinthian Hall, its Carriage House, gardens, and conservatory are home to not only a historic record of the estate’s glory days, but of the city as well. The Kansas City Museum at Corinthian Hall offers residents a wide range of historical programs, many for children, even as it undergoes restoration. “Hard-hat tours” of the renovation are available.

Some of the decidedly more modern neighborhood activities center around the neighborhood’s art galleries including Mosaic Brain, Back Door Pottery, and the Neon Gallery. The Historic Northeast Cultural Arts Commission hosts community art and music events, such as the Chalk Walk Festival, ongoing art exhibits, and other cultural activities, including an online literary publication.

The neighborhood also has its own independent weekly newspaper, Kansas City’s Northeast News.
