Kirkside is a neighborhood on the south side of Kansas City, Missouri, not far from Grandview and Lee’s Summit. Situated near the communities of Ruskin Heights, Crossgates, and Hickman Mills, this community is bounded by Longview Road on the north, Food Lane on the west, Baytown Road on the east, and East 18th Terrace on the south. Part of Jackson County, Kirkside is in the 64138 zip code area.
The west side of this community is a fully developed residential area that includes over 100 single-family homes and a few apartment complexes and townhome units. Much of the east side of the neighborhood is undeveloped green space, with the exception of the Smith-Hale Middle School, which can be found in the northeast corner.
One of the most prominent attractions near the Kirkside neighborhood is Longview Lake, located just outside of neighborhood bounds on the east. This 930-acre lake is adjacent to more than 4,850 acres of parkland. Longview Lake Park is the second largest park in the county and offers many recreation options, including a horse park, golf course, picnic facilities, miles of biking and jogging trails, a softball complex, a dog training area, and a balloon port. The lake is used for fishing, boating, and swimming and offers multi-lane boat ramps, fishing docks, and a beach.
Along the opposite shore of Longview Lake is the Kansas City Metropolitan Jr. College, one of the only higher education options on this side of the city.
For local shopping, residents of Kirkside don’t have to travel far from home. Near Blue Ridge Boulevard there are at least two retail centers within minutes of this community, including Ruskin Heights Shopping Center and Truman Corners Shopping Center.
Thanks in part to the nearby lake, Kirkside could be a considered a scenic community, and yet residents enjoy easy access to local shopping and recreation.
