Pride, Preservation, Participation. This motto of Squier Park in Kansas City, Missouri represents the neighborhood’s residents and more than 100 years of history within the state’s largest city. Named for the late 1800s Squier homestead owned by James Jordon Squier, Squier Park was once home to one of the most majestic estates in Missouri – Squier Manor.
Squier Manor extended an entire block on Troost Avenue. The homestead covered approximately 52 acres that included ornamental gardens and a deer park. In the early 1900s, Squier’s daughter Cora and her husband took over the estate and began dividing up the homestead for residential development. Many of the homes found within Squier Park today are part of this early development. The original Squier Manor was demolished in 1925 and businesses now line the block where the home once majestically stood.
The current neighborhood is somewhat larger than the original homestead area with the boundaries located at East 35th Street on the north, East 39th Street at the south, Troost Avenue on the west, and The Paseo at the east. The community is adjacent to the Central Hyde Park neighborhood and south of the Center City community. Residents are only minutes away from Hyde Park where walking paths are surrounded by a scenic landscape.
Within a 2-mile radius of Squier Park are Rockhurst University, University of Missouri at Kansas City, Kansas City Sculpture Park, Brush Creek Park, and Gillham Park. Downtown Kansas City is approximately 3 miles to the north. The area just south of Downtown offers Truman Medical Center-Hospital Hill, Metropolitan Community College, and Crown Center. The National World War I Museum at Liberty Memorial is located at Crown Center.
