The Woodlands neighborhood is located just east of the city of Columbia, two miles off of highway 63. Residents here can enjoy the charm of the country while living within a quick commute to the city.

The relatively new neighborhood is on a 400-acre state-lot subdivision that started development in phases beginning in the early 1990s. The last phase is now being developed, as of 2011. Each lot is from one and a half to two acres in size. Residents have all the amenities of the big city, with natural gas, underground electricity, and water, but also the comfort and privacy of knowing your neighbors aren’t squeezing you in from every side. Size regulations on construction is rather loose. Most homes are 3,000 to 5,000 square feet, but those with a big family have plenty of room to build a sprawling home.

While you won’t find developed trails and parks in this unique neighborhood, you can create your own trails in your own large yard. The area, as the name indicates, is wooded. Animal life is abundant, with lots of deer, turkey, rabbits, and squirrels to thrill the heart of any nature lover. The lots offer plenty of room for the home gardener to create her own plots for vegetables and flowers.

As the city of Columbia encroaches on the neighborhood, new roads are being developed. Residents of this upscale neighborhood have quick access to Highways 63 and 70. The Discovery Market commercial complex, which is being developed as of 2011, will bring shopping, offices, recreational facilities, and new schools to the area.
