Leominster, located roughly 40 miles northwest of Boston, was settled in 1653 as part of Lancaster. In 1675, King Philip’s War broke out. This conflict destroyed many towns, and killed a large number of colonists, including those in Lancaster. Many who weren’t killed fled the town. After the war, a land grant that included Leominster helped bring colonists back to the area, and in 1740 Leominster had a large enough population to incorporate into a town.

With such a fascinating history, Leominster is a great place for history buffs. Monument Square in downtown Leominster features memorials from the Spanish-American War and the Civil War, while historical architecture dots the landscape. The legendary Johnny Appleseed was born in Leominster in 1845, and residents and visitors can hike along the Johnny Appleseed Trail and enjoy Johnny Appleseed State Park.

Beautiful hills and lakes surround Leominster along with several parks. Nashua Valley Conservation Area, Coggshall Park and Bird Sanctuary, Fitchburg City Forest, Prospect Park Conservation Area, and Lancaster Town Forest are just a few parks located nearby. Leominster State Forest on the west side of the city covers 4,300 acres. It includes a portion of Midstate Trail and is popular for mountain biking and hiking. Other activities include rock climbing, cross-country skiing, hiking, fishing, boating, canoeing, and swimming. Doyle Reservation covers 170 acres in Leominster and features cross-country skiing, picnicking, and 3.5 miles of walking trails.

Those renting apartments in Leominster will appreciate the area’s mass transit system. A commuter rail from Boston’s North Station offers a stop in North Leominster on the Fitchburg Line, and the Montachusett Area Regional Transit Authority (MART) provides bus routes throughout the metro area.
