Things to Do in Columbia:

Downtown Columbia is a terrific starting point when exploring your new hometown. The area is filled with stores, restaurants, and businesses along the lake, with beautiful pathways connecting it all. If you want shopping on a grander scale, the Mall in Columbia houses more than 200 stores and five anchor stores. An outdoor park-like area includes a water feature, a movie complex, and several outdoor cafes.

The Merriweather Post Pavilion is a beautiful amphitheater that has hosted such legendary musicians as the Grateful Dead, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, the Who, and Janis Joplin. Set among 40 acres of forest, the pavilion hosts everything from rock to jazz to hip-hop to alternative to classical. This is a fantastic place to see a concert, surrounded by natural beauty.

Speaking of beauty, don’t overlook the Columbia Art Center! This fantastic location has gallery exhibits, a gift shop, art classes, a Japanese Garden, and special programs for children. Historic Oakland Manor should definitely be on your must-visit list when you move to Columbia. Located in Downtown Columbia, this historic manor was built in 1811. It is open to the public for tours and also hosts special events. Oakland Manor is one of Howard County’s oldest buildings. James Rouse was careful to preserve and protect the historic buildings in Columbia, and they are located throughout the city. Other buildings include the Barn at Oakland Mills, Dorsey Manor, the Wilde Lake stone house, and Oliver’s Carriage House.

With a landscape that is beautiful and inviting year-round, there are plenty of outdoor activities to enjoy in Columbia. If you enjoy horseback riding (or want lessons), visit the Columbia Horse Center. If you enjoy sports – particularly skateboarding, baseball, and mini golf, then head over to the Columbia Sports Park. Ice skaters will appreciate the public Columbia Ice Rink, which offers lessons to all ages and ability levels. There’s also the Columbia Swim Center, an indoor swim center with water slides.

Lake Kittamaqundi is a beautiful location, located near the Mall in Columbia. It is a 27-acre reservoir that hosts several summer festivals and other events. Lake Centennial, surrounded by Centennial Park, is ideal for fishing and boating. The park includes a walking trail and a wildlife area. Columbia’s largest lake, Lake Elkhorn, is 37 acres. The surrounding park includes a walking path around the lake and a picnic pavilion.
