Though the city of Columbia is less than a half-century old, this unique community has been quick to develop into a highly desirable area for apartment renting. A planned community that was established in 1967, the idea for Columbia originated in the mind of James Rouse, who believed that a city could enhance its residents’ quality of life. Rouse had a vision that Columbia would be a city less concerned with urban development and more intent on fostering interaction between residents.
Today, Columbia includes ten villages, which give the city a small-town kind of atmosphere. Rent an apartment in any one of these neighborhoods, and you’ll have access major shopping centers, schools, medical services, recreational facilities, and jobs.
Major companies based in Columbia include W.R. Grace and Company, MICROS Systems, Integral Systems, and Corporate Office Properties Trust. The federal government also employs many of Columbia’s citizens with several Department of Defense installations in the area.
The People Tree is a major landmark in Columbia, serving as a symbol of Rouse’s hope for a close-knit community. Community events often take place at the People Tree. Other popular attractions in Columbia include Merriweather Post Pavilion, the three area lakes, and the numerous antique stores in the downtown area. Money magazine has rated Columbia one of the top ten “Best Places to Live” in the United States three times, which means it might be just the perfect place to rent your next apartment.
