Crossgate Neighborhood

Located within the Greater Louisville Metropolitan Area, the neighborhood of Crossgate is, in actuality, a city of fewer than 500 people in Jefferson County. Located just off Brownsboro Road near I-264, this tiny town of about a hundred homes was built in the large part during the late 1960s.

Crossgate’s residential area is well maintained, and most homes have large lots and lovely landscaping that includes old growth trees. Residents have access to several outstanding medical facilities, including Baptist East Hospital and Kosair Children’s Hospital.

Crossgate’s small size contributes to its neighborly atmosphere and small town feel, despite its nearness to big city amenities offered by Louisville. This is a neighborhood of picnics and yard sales, where people know each other, and actively meet to work on neighborhood problems via monthly City Commission meetings held in a local church and open to the public.

Neighborhood schools in Crossgate include Dunn Elementary School on Ruby Lane, Kammerer Middle School on Westboro Road, and Ballard High School, located on Brownsboro Road.

While Crossgate is pedestrian friendly, with many restaurants and shops within easy walking distance, its easy access to downtown Louisville separates it from the average small town in the state. Just minutes away lie world class arts performances, including theater, opera, ballet, and symphony; museums and historical sites; distilleries still brewing world-famous Kentucky bourbons; and Churchill Downs, site of the famous Kentucky Derby.

An outstanding local attraction near Crossgate is the Louisville Zoo, which provides a great family day out. With more than 125 acres, the zoo’s collection of animals numbers about 1,300 grouped into geographic designations, including a gorilla forest and tiger tundra. The zoo has successfully finished raising funds to complete its Glacier Run project and will soon be adding more features.
