West Southwest 2 Apartments for Rent

Some neighborhoods seem to have it all, and West Southwest 2 belongs in that category. The Governor’s Mansion, The Kansas Museum of History, and Gage Park fall within its boundaries. So does some of the priciest and most famous real estate in the city. Former Governor and presidential candidate Alf Landon’s personal home is here. His daughter, Nancy Landon Kassebaum Baker, became a U. S. Senator. Close by is another famous home, Merlot Castle, built in 1883 by a Frenchman fleeing the guillotine.

While some newer homes in this area are very upscale, the neighborhood is balanced with average-sized homes. Many parts of West Southwest 2 are spacious ranch homes and contemporaries. Large trees shade the sidewalks and carefully landscaped lawns.

West Southwest 2 is bound by the Kansas River, Southwest Gage Boulevard, Southwest 17th Street, and I-470 and is centrally located for shopping, entertainment, and recreation.

A large retail area is just west, Wanamaker Road. Most nationally known stores are found here. Also along Wanamaker Road are a number of movie theaters and restaurants, ranging from fast-food to casual dining establishments. Smaller shopping areas such as the one along 10th Street make everyday shopping simple.

Recreational areas are within the boundaries, too. Acres of rolling prairie grassland at the Governor’s mansion, Cedar Crest, have public walking trails, and these are well used. Nearby is a park with access to the Kansas River, great for those who like to fish, canoe, or kayak.

Other recreational sites are only minutes away. Wood Valley Racquet Club has indoor and outdoor tennis courts, a pool, exercise and weight training facilities. Shawnee Country Club and Topeka Country Club are nearby private golf courses. Several public courses are also close. The Topeka Round-Up Club is the equestrian center, with boarding, indoor and outdoor arenas, and 260 acres of trails.
