Residents of Southwest Topeka are in an enviable location, close to the largest retail and entertainment district in town and to great recreational sites. This is a newer area of Topeka, and homes range from spacious ranch homes to quite upscale contemporaries. Many areas have sidewalks, allowing for walks to nearby attractions.
But one home in this area does have a long history – in fact it goes back to France and the days of the guillotine. The Merlot Castle, on Huntoon Street, was built in 1883 in a Chateauesque style, resembling Merlot’s French home. It was used as a winery during prohibition, and it is again a winery, though now legal. Legends surround this historic home, which is on the Register of Historic Kansas Places. Recent owners declare it to be haunted. It is open for tours and wine tastings.
The Southwest Topeka neighborhood lies east and west of Southwest Wanamaker Road, extending east to I-470 and Southwest Gage, south to Southwest 37th Street. Part of the neighborhood extends west to Southwest Indian Hills Road.
There are many fast-food and casual dining restaurants nearby, as well as several large cinema complexes. Target, Wal-Mart, Kohl’s, as well as Coldwater Creek and Dillards are major department stores within the neighborhood.
Golfers might be impressed with the two public courses nearby. Western Hills is at 21st Street, and Cypress Ridge is at Urish Road. Cypress Ridge dates back to 1955.
Anyone with an interest in horses will be delighted with the facilities of the Topeka Roundup Club. With 260 acres of trails, the Roundup Club offers boarding, indoor and outdoor arenas, instruction, and horse shows.
West Ridge Lanes and Family Fun Center offers 32 bowling lanes, an outdoor 18-hole miniature golf course, and Go-Karts, making it an outstanding place for birthday parties and family nights.
