Shawnee Heights Apartments for Rent(hide neighborhood information)
About three miles south of Downtown Kansas City, Kansas, Shawnee Heights is a large neighborhood adjacent to the Kansas/Missouri state line. The community is centered between Interstate 70 on the north and Interstate 35 to the south. Nearby neighborhoods include Rosedale, Oakwood, and Armourdale.
Shawnee Heights is an older, diverse neighborhood. Home construction varies from Victorian to bungalow. A majority of the homes are older with some newer construction spread throughout the community. One of the more notable residences is located at 935 Shawnee Drive – Sauer Mansion, also known as Sauer Castle or the old “haunted castle.”
Constructed by Anton Sauer during the mid to latter 1800s, Sauer Mansion is an 18th century German Gothic manor, which is indicative of Sauer’s German descent. The mansion later took on the “castle” name and has since become a popular topic of local storytellers.
Near the neighborhood’s southern boundary is Rosedale Park. Rosedale is a popular recreational venue for residents who enjoy disc golf and Frisbee. This more than 50-acre park also offers softball fields; tennis courts; playground equipment; a skate park; picnic areas; and walking trails.
Shawnee Heights is located in the 66103 zip code of Wyandotte County. Public schools near the community include Noble Prentis Elementary, Argentine Middle, and J.C. Harmon High School. The elementary school is on the south side of Springhorn Lane and within walking distance to residents living in the south-southwest portion of the neighborhood. The middle and high schools are less than a mile to the west of the community.
