Lenexa, KS Apartments for Rent

Roughly 12 miles from Kansas City, Lenexa is slightly removed from the hustle of the downtown area, giving this suburban city the best of both worlds – a close-knit, charming community not far from the museums, events, theaters, restaurants, shopping, and nightlife of the large metro area.

The city’s unique name is derived from the name of Shawnee Indian Chief Blackhoof’s widow, Na-Nex-Se Blackhoof. Chief Blackhoof was second to sign an 1854 treaty that granted 1.6 million acres of a Shawnee Indian reservation to the US government.

Around 1857, James Butler Hickok claimed 160 acres of land in what is now Lenexa. He served as one of the first constables of Monticello Township, and in 1859 he became part of Russell, Waddell, and Majors – a freight company that was the parent company of the Pony Express. “Wild Bill” Hickok went on to become an Old West legend; he was a frontier lawman, a gambler, a marksman, and a Union Army soldier.

Today’s Lenexa is a popular city. It was once named one of the top cities in the US, so be confident with your decision to rent an apartment in Lenexa. Once known as the Spinach Capital of the World, you’ll enjoy attending Spinach Fest, an annual celebration that includes the largest spinach salad. Other events include Lenexa Community Days, the Lenexa Chili Challenge, and the Great Lenexa Barbeque Battle Championship.

Lenexa’s beautiful, historic Old Town is rivaled only by the city’s amazing parks as superb afternoon and weekend destinations. Be sure to visit Wild Bill Hickok Park, which includes a jogging/walking trail, a playground, and a basketball court. Other parks include Sar-Ko-Par Trails Park, a 53-acre park with a swimming pool, a three-acre lake, five picnic areas, six shelters, four walking/jogging trails, a gazebo, five playgrounds, four lighted tennis courts, a community garden, and Barn Historical Museum. Black Hoof Park is located on Lake Lenexa, a deep-water lake that spans 35 acres. Black Hoof Park covers 160 acres and includes trails, a boat launch, and a playground.
