A second option was to build a dam to form Big Creek Lake and save the town. The latter was chosen, leading to phenomenal growth in Polk City, which now sits between Big Creek State Park and Saylorville Lake.

The Neil Smith Bike Trail runs along Saylorville, through Polk City, and on to Big Creek State Park. Saylorville Lake provides boaters with a full-service marina, two swimming beaches, and camping.
