Polk City, IA Apartments for Rent

In the 1960s, Polk City was literally saved by a dam. The Army Corps of Engineers considered a plan to buy out every Polk City resident in order to allow Saylorville Lake to overtake the area. A second option was to build a dam to form Big Creek Lake and save the town. The latter was chosen, leading to phenomenal growth in Polk City, which now sits between Big Creek State Park and Saylorville Lake.

Home to the only town square in Polk County, Polk City has a range of activities to make any outdoorsman swoon. Jester Park offers a golf course and horseback riding. The Neil Smith Bike Trail runs along Saylorville, through Polk City, and on to Big Creek State Park. Saylorville Lake provides boaters with a full-service marina, two swimming beaches, and camping. During winter, snowmobiling and cross-country skiing are popular.

Located 20 minutes north of Des Moines and 15 minutes south of Ames, Polk City gets you where you need to be fast. North Polk Community School District serves the area students.
