Capitol East Apartments for Rent

The Capital East neighborhood is bound by I-235 on the north and East 14th Street on the West. The golden dome of the Iowa State Capitol Building is within sight. It is a neighborhood of older homes, heavy shade, and sidewalks.

Just to the west of the neighborhood, and within walking distance, is the Historic East Village, an exciting new redevelopment that includes the Capitol Building, The State Historical Museum, Federal Buildings. It’s a great shopping and entertainment scene in the historic part of Des Moines. The D Line provides free trolley service through the district, though the area is very pedestrian-friendly. The River Walk runs along the west side of the Village.

Des Moines has, in fact, about 100 miles of trails for walking, biking, and running. Many of the downtown trails are dotted with public art displays.

If the small shops of the Historic East Village aren’t enough, major retailers such as Target, Sears, and J. C. Penney can be found at the nearest mall, Southridge. A Wal-Mart is about 5 miles west on I-235.

Several educational institutions are scattered around Des Moines. Mercy College of Health Sciences and Des Moines University of Osteopathic Medicine are close by. Des Moines Community College is a short drive to the north.

Nearby Grey’s Lake Park has a 100-acre lake, 2 miles of lighted walking trails, year-round programs, and connects to other Iowa Trails. Big Creek State Park and Saylorville Lake are two popular recreational areas outside of Des Moines.

Waveland and A. H. Bland are the nearest public golf courses, and Wakonda the nearest private golf club.

There are a number of fast-food restaurants close to the Capital East neighborhood. The Fleur Cinema and Café are just a short drive northwest. Des Moines enjoys good public transportation through DART, serving most neighborhoods.
