Life in the “City of Firsts” is good – and getting better. Kokomo, a small city north of Indianapolis, has experienced a boom of sorts, with new residents and businesses discovering the advantages of this charming Midwestern community.

The city is named for Miami Chief Ma-Ko-Ko-Mo, and his burial monument is located downtown. In September, area residents head to the Koh-Koh-Mah & Foster Living History Encampment to experience reenactments, music, demonstrations, and more during the annual festival.

When you’ve selected your Kokomo apartment to rent, history will surround you. The Howard County Historical Society is located in the historic Seiberling Mansion, completed in 1891. This beautiful home is a Kokomo landmark, listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1972. The Old Silk Stocking Neighborhood, where the mansion is located, is a historic district that contains many Victorian, Tudor Revival, and Colonial Revival homes. The district is a great place to visit – not only for its gorgeous architecture, but also for its two parks and several businesses.

Other things to do in Kokomo include bicycling, jogging, or walking the Kokomo Industrial Heritage Trail, playing golf at the Wildcat Creek Golf Club, or visiting one of Kokomo’s museums. Grissom Air Museum includes an outdoor exhibit with military aircraft and an indoor museum with a variety of other exhibits. The Elwood Haynes Museum celebrates the automotive industry’s pioneer Elwood Haynes, who developed the first car in 1894. The Kokomo Automotive Museum includes more than 100 classic cars – including Haynes’ 1894 car.

Visit Kokomo Reservoir Park and go canoeing or kayaking, or head to Jackson Morrow Park and enjoy its picnic areas, walking paths, nature center, and the Kokomo Pipeline Skate Park. Enjoy shopping at the Kokomo Downtown Farmers’ Market, which features locally grown produce, arts and crafts, handmade items, and more. Stroll through Kokomo’s many antique shops, visit Mohr Dog Park or Mehlig Dog Park, or cheer on a race at Kokomo Speedway. During the summer, cool off at Kokomo Beach Family Aquatic Center, which features a sand playground, a splash pad, a lazy river, a slide tower, water slides, and a leisure pool.

With so much to see and do, it is easy to see why Kokomo is a favorite apartment-renting destination! Find your new place today and enjoy this fun-filled City of Firsts!
