Perhaps the most famous landmark and tourist attraction in the area is the Lincoln Home. The house was built in 1839 and Abraham Lincoln’s wife, Mary, gave birth to two sons in the home. For the eldest son, the home that had been his birthplace, three years later unfortunately became the site of his funeral. The Lincoln Family resided in the house until moving to the White House in February of 1861. The house was added to the National Register of Historic places on August 18, 1971. The surrounding four blocks and the visitor’s center are also part of the historic presidential memorial.
While the area is dense with historic significance, Pioneer Park is also home to many parks. Jaycee Park is 13 acres in size and is heavily treed. There are baseball diamonds situated in all three corners of the park, picnic shelters, a playground, and wide open areas that can be used for casual football and soccer games. Enos Park is nearby as well. It’s a smaller park, only 3.5 acres in size. It became part of the parks system in 1905, making it one of the area’s oldest established parks. There is a playground, trails, and picnic shelters. There are several other small parks in the area and shopping, dining, and entertainment options are also plentiful in the general vicinity.
