The neighborhood of Mather and Wells in Springfield Illinois is located just blocks from the state capitol area and features streets with mature trees and older homes. The name dates back to 1852 when banker Tom Mathers and attorney Charles Wells purchased the land the neighborhood now rests on. East Capitol and Eleventh are both main thoroughfares through this west-side neighborhood.

Sidewalks along the streets make walking to and from public transportation easy. Buses operate on regular schedules along East Cook Street and provide access to the downtown, Illinois State Capitol, and shopping malls.

The state capitol and home of President Abraham Lincoln is rich with historical landmarks. The Capitol building is located just 10 blocks east at Second Street while The Illinois State Museum is just two blocks south of the Capitol. The Lincoln Home is a National Historic Site managed by the U.S. Park Service a few blocks east of the neighborhood. Many other historic sites are open the to the public.

Local schools include Feitshans Elementary and Washington Middle School. High School students attend Lanphier High on North Eleventh Street. Lincoln Land Community College has a campus in the neighborhood at Cook and 15th Streets.

Lake Springfield provides boating, fishing, and other recreation just south of the city. Facilities include Lincoln Greens Golf Course and four parks. Sports fans can attend Springfield Sliders baseball games in family friendly atmosphere. Illinois State University and Springfield University both host games by their school sports teams.

Finding housing in the Mather and Wells neighborhood can be challenging. This neighborhood has been revitalized with assistance from Cherry Hills volunteers and The Springfield Project. A continuing commitment from both organizations has brought pride to the neighborhood and forged ties among the residents.
