The South Garden neighborhood lies south of downtown Savannah and the Savannah River. Nearby major thoroughfares include Harry S. Truman Parkway, which cuts across the easternmost part of the neighborhood. Abercrom Street/Extension/State Route 204 lies to the west, while US 80 and I-516 to the north. The older South Garden neighborhood is laid out in a grid, with the numbered east-west streets spanning East 66th on the north to East 72nd Street on the south. Although homes were constructed during several different periods, many were built in the late 1940s. The neighborhood’s level streets offer shady trees and a pleasant area for walking and bike riding. South Garden has no sidewalks, so caution should be taken for traffic.

Just north of South Garden is a medical complex that houses Memorial Health, Backus Childrens Hospital, Memorial University Medical Center, and Hoskins Cancer Research Building. South Garden also lies east of Savannah Technical College and west of Savannah State University.

South Garden sits to the south of Grayson Stadium, the home of the Savannah Sand Gnats minor league baseball team. The stadium is located in Daffin Park, which features tennis, playgrounds, baseball, soccer, basketball, a swimming pool, and a one and one-half mile paved sidewalk that skirts the perimeter of the park. Additionally, there is a lake with a pavilion and fishing for children.

Nearby shopping, dining, and entertainment areas include Victory Drive Shopping Center and Victory Square, both located north of South Garden. The centers include big-box stores and fast-food restaurants. Trademark Cinemas Victory Square Stadium 9 provides movies, and the Savannah Community Theatre is a few blocks northeast.
