Although homes were constructed during several different periods, many were built in the late 1940s. The neighborhood’s level streets offer shady trees and a pleasant area for walking and bike riding. South Garden has no sidewalks, so caution should be taken for traffic.
Just north of South Garden is a medical complex that houses Memorial Health, Backus Childrens Hospital, Memorial University Medical Center, and Hoskins Cancer Research Building. South Garden also lies east of Savannah Technical College and west of Savannah State University.
South Garden sits to the south of Grayson Stadium, the home of the Savannah Sand Gnats minor league baseball team. Additionally, there is a lake with a pavilion and fishing for children.
Nearby shopping, dining, and entertainment areas include Victory Drive Shopping Center and Victory Square, both located north of South Garden. The centers include big-box stores and fast-food restaurants. Trademark Cinemas Victory Square Stadium 9 provides movies, and the Savannah Community Theatre is a few blocks northeast.
