Southwest is a medium-sized, primarily residential neighborhood of Atlanta. Harbin Road Southwest serves as its eastern border, and Interstate 285 marks its western border. Cascade Road borders Southwest to the north, while Panther Trail Southwest and Campbellton Road Southwest mark its southern border.

The Cascade Springs Nature Preserve is east of the northernmost part of the Southwest neighborhood. It’s a 134-acre nature preserve. It has a couple of creeks, numerous hiking trails, several hills, open parkland, a hardwood forest that is well-preserved, a waterfall, and open parkland. The Melvin Drive Park and Adams Park are also near the community of Southwest.

The picturesque Mt. Gilead Lake is located within Southwest, as are its surrounding woods and preserve area. The lake provides water sports and swimming to residents.

Southwest is a very family-friendly neighborhood. It contains a few schools within its borders, including two schools known for high achievement among their students. Kimberly Elementary School and the Therrell School of Health and Science lie within Southwest. Also nearby are Sesame Seed Preschool, Seeds of Faith Christian Academy, Cascade Elementary School, and Southwest Atlanta Christian School.

There are also several specialist studios and hobby schools for the after-school interests of young residents of Southwest. The locally renowned Crossland Karate is only a mile south of the community. Dance Makers of Atlanta, known for its achievements, is less than two miles northwest of the Southwest neighborhood. The nearby Marlene Rounds Christian School of Dance combines the foundations of religion with dance principles.

The Greenbriar Mall, one of the most popular shopping centers in the greater Atlanta area, is only a mile south of Southwest. It includes many shops, such as Macy’s and J.C. Penney’s. Its food court has fast food chains and locally owned eateries.
