At over 131 acres, Grant Park is the oldest city park in Atlanta, Georgia and one of the largest. The park contains Zoo Atlanta, one of the oldest zoos in the United States, founded in 1889. The park also contains the unique Cyclorama, a 360-degree mural painted in 1886. A rotating stadium takes visitors on a journey back to the Civil War’s Atlanta Campaign through the largest oil painting in the world (See if you can spot Clark Gable in the accompanying diorama, who said his image would complete the display).
The community surrounding the park is also called Grant Park. It is Atlanta’s largest historic neighborhood, with Victorian cottages and charming bungalows nestled among mature trees. Historic landmarks include Grant Mansion (built 1854) and the Atlanta Stockade, built around 1860. Today, it houses apartments. Walking tours of the homes are available through the Atlanta Preservation Center.
