High Halden is a wooded neighborhood in East Leon, Florida. A local university is a short drive from the community, as is a golf course. Resident high school students can attend classes a short distance from home. Fun in the sun is available at several area parks and at a pair of state parks.
Florida Agriculture and Mechanical University is approximately 10 miles west of High Halden, on the highest hill in Tallahassee. The school, which opened in 1887, offers undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs. Less than five miles from High Halden is Lincoln High School. More than 1,900 students enroll in the school each year in grades nine through 12. In 2010, Lincoln High was rated the 110th best high school in the nation by Newsweek.
The Capital City Country Club has an 18-hole golf course with pine tree-lined fairways and rolling hills roughly 10 miles from High Halden. The course traces its roots to 1908. For sports fans, Chaires Capitola Community Park is an ideal spot and is less than half a mile from High Halden. Basketball courts, tennis courts, and a baseball field are available at the park and are interspersed with green spaces and wooded areas.
Less than 10 miles from High Halden, the 1,076-acre Alfred B. Maclay Gardens State Park features two lakes for fishing, swimming, boating, and kayaking. Visitors can also hike, bike, or walk on trails that overlook the lake and connect the park’s many gardens.
The Lake Jackson Mounds Archaeological State Park is adjacent to Maclay State Park and features artifacts of the Native American society that lived near Lake Jackson eight centuries ago. Short hiking trails and a picnic area are available, and guided tours are given on request.
