South of downtown Tallahassee, Florida is the campus of Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University – Florida A&M, also known as FAMU. FAMU sits on 422 acres that contain 156 buildings in a setting of lush foliage and tall oak trees. There are nearly 12,000 students attending here from over 70 countries, studying for 62 bachelor’s and 39 master’s degrees.

Students looking for off-campus housing have several choices, and many of them specifically cater to the needs of students. The Seminole Grand Apartments, Villa Dylano, and University Village are some of these choices.

One of the places for students on a food budget to hang out and get something to eat is the Mellow Mushroom. They specialize in pizza, sandwiches, salads, hoagies, and beer. Poboy’s and Gordo’s are other popular places.

There are many places for students to go to get away from the pressures of the campus. Those who love hiking can try out Tallahassee – St. Mark’s Historic Railroad State Trails. Like many converted railroad lines across the country, this trail was formerly a railroad between Tallahassee and St. Mark’s, but is now a paved trail used for recreation. The trail is flat, but it winds in and out through some spectacular woodland areas.

History lovers can visit the Mission San Luis de Apalachee for a genuine 17th century experience. The Mission used to be the western capital of Spanish Florida, and visitors can see what it was like through costumed guides, reconstructed buildings, exhibits, and demonstrations.
